• At least 14 people were killed and nine others injured in a shooting at a bar in the South African municipality of Soweto, local authorities said. • Sri Lanka woke up today to an uncertain future in which both its President and Prime Minister are poised to resign after thousands of protesters stormed their homes in anger at the country’s crippling economic crisis. • President Joe Biden on Friday signed an executive order protecting access to reproductive health services after the Supreme Court ruled Roe v. Wade had fallen. • Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, announced his $44 billion deal to buy Twitter on Friday.

July 11th is World Population Day. The world population will reach 8 billion this year, up from 7 billion in 2021, according to the United Nations.

Tuesday

The House of Representatives special committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the US Capitol will hold its seventh hearing beginning at 10 a.m. ET. The committee has not yet announced any witnesses.

Wednesday

President Joe Biden begins a contentious trip to the Middle East with stops in Israel, the West Bank and Saudi Arabia — a foreign policy compromise that completes the reversal of his campaign pledge to make the kingdom a “pariah.” Meeting Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in person would be the first time Biden has directly engaged with Saudi Arabia’s de facto ruler since taking office. Biden has strongly criticized the Saudis’ human rights record, their war in Yemen and their government’s role in the assassination of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

Thursday

A third hearing is scheduled for two-time US basketball Olympic gold medalist and WNBA star Brittney Griner, who pleaded guilty to drug charges in a Russian court near Moscow last week. Griner, who the US State Department has found wrongfully imprisoned, faces up to 10 years in prison on the charges. Griner’s lawyers said last week they expect the court to consider the 31-year-old athlete’s guilty plea and hope for leniency. It’s also Bastille Day in France.

Saturday

The new National Suicide Prevention Lifeline number – 988 – goes online in the US. Similar to dialing 911 in an emergency, all 988 calls are routed directly to the National Suicide Hotline.

Wimbledon

The men’s singles final on Center Court has just started today. Nick Kyrgios meets Novak Djokovic, who came from behind to defeat Cameron Norrie 2-6 6-3 6-2 6-4 on Friday. Last week, 22-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal withdrew from the tournament before the semi-finals due to a stomach injury – Kyrgios automatically sent him to the final. On Saturday, Elena Rybakina won the women’s singles final, claiming her first Grand Slam title and first for Kazakhstan. Rybakina defeated world No. 3 Ons Jabeur in three sets, winning 3-6 6-2 6-2 after falling from a set deficit.

British Open

The 150th Open Championship – known outside the UK as the British Open – begins on Thursday at the Old Course in St Andrews, Scotland. The Open is one of the four Grand Slam golf tournaments and St Andrews is considered the “Home of Golf”.
