50,000 people protest against the Meloni government in Rome

50,000 people participated in an anti-government opposition demonstration in Rome. The protest motto: “There is an alternative for a fairer future.”

Around 50,000 people attended one in Rome on Saturday Anti-government demonstration by the center-left party (PD – Partito Democracia), the largest opposition party in Italy. The demonstration in the central Piazza del Popolo was led by PD president Elly Schlein. The motto of the demonstration was “There is an alternative for a fairer future”.

Main opposition politicians participated in the demonstration against the budget project of the right-wing government led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni directed. Protesters stressed that it contains very few measures to support families and workers in times of inflation and social uncertainty. The protest is also directed “against the dangerous reforms of the right”. The Meloni government is working on a constitutional reform to introduce direct election of the prime minister, which opposition parties oppose.

“This square is the place where we will try to build an alternative for Italy, starting with social justice. Opposition parties want to find common ground,” Schlein said.

The Meloni government has been in operation since October 2022. The center-right parties supporting the government have a clear majority in parliament.
