A tsunami warning has not yet been issued.
According to initial reports, the quake caused some damage and power outages in several counties in Northern California. More than 50,000 homes would be left without power.

The earthquake was recorded at a depth of 16.1 kilometers; the epicenter is 12 kilometers southwest of Ferndale, about 350 kilometers north of San Francisco.
For decades, California has lived in fear of a repeat of the April 18, 1906 earthquake that killed thousands and devastated San Francisco. In this case, the earthquake had a magnitude of 7.9.
Today’s nightmare is that of the Big One, which is a devastating earthquake along the San Andreas Fault.
Today’s quake comes after Saturday’s scare, when a 3.6-magnitude earthquake struck San Francisco at 3:39 a.m., waking thousands of residents and causing minor damage.
