6.9 magnitude earthquake off Taiwan Last hour

(ANSA) TAIPEI, MARCH 23 A magnitude 6.9 earthquake was recorded off the coast of Taiwan. This was announced by the US geological survey service Usgs. According to the USGS, the earthquake struck at a depth of 10 kilometers, 70 kilometers south of the city of Hualien.

So far, no casualties or major damage have been reported.

Taiwan’s weather service reported an initial magnitude 5.4 tremor at 1:06 a.m., followed by another at 1:41 a.m. with a magnitude of 6.6. A 6.1 magnitude aftershock struck two minutes later.

The government sent alerts to residents’ cellphones.

Located at the intersection of two tectonic plates, the island of Taiwan is regularly shaken by earthquakes, which can be deadly at magnitude 6 or greater, but their effects depend on the location and depth at which they occur.

The Usgs classifies the danger of today’s earthquake as “green” and expects few casualties and damage.

In January, a 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck the east coast of the island, with no damage or casualties. (HAND).
