7/4/22: SEA at SD Open Game Thread

Sometimes scrolling through the images in the photo tool helps bring back long-suppressed memories. I’ve been looking for some images of the Mariners’ unlikely comeback win in 2016, but instead stumbled upon frame by frame of the painful three-game sweep they suffered at the hands of the Padres in May 2021. In case you supplanted it too, they lost the first game 16-1, the second 6-4 and the last 9-2, doing irreparable damage to both the 2021 Mariners’ run differential and fun differential , although Jake in the series preview, the two teams diverged heavily afterward. This time around, the Padres don’t have superstar Fernando Tatís Jr. to wreak havoc on the Mariners, but Manny Machado — John’s preseason MVP pick — has picked up the whole doldrums.

Lineups:

The Mariners bring JP Crawford back into the lineup after ending his suspension but lose Jesse Winker for a week while serving his, meaning Marcus Wilson gets his first career start. Adam Frazier prevails over his former team and left winger Manaea.

News:

Sounds like Ty France is about to return, only in Ty-me:

If you’re comfortable with Everett, swing to the AquaSox game sometime this week where you can catch Kyle Lewis in rehab action (the Rainiers are in Reno this week, so KLew will be chilling with the FrogBois):

Marco’s exit from this video is my favorite part of it:

Information about today’s game:

Today’s game begins at 3:40 PT, an odd start time for an odd little two-game streak starting on a holiday. If you’re out and about catching the game on the radio on Seattle Sports 710, or if, like me, you’re stuck indoors with terrified animals and a bunch of neighbors who find the no-fireworks charms of a proposal rather than a law, you can Watch the match on ROOT Sports NW.
