83 percent of Peruvian citizens believe the government of Peru should bring forward general elections, while just 13 percent are in favor of President Dina Boluarte completing her term and ending her term in 2026, according to a poll by ‘La República’, Peru’s IEP poll.

For example, seven out of ten respondents disagree that Boluarte took over as head of state before the sacking of Pedro Castillo, who at the 7th Legislative Chamber and set up an emergency government.

The rejection of the Peruvian president, who has been in office for eleven days, is similar both in rural areas (77 percent) and in urban areas (74 percent). The only place in the country where it gets more support is in the Lima metropolitan area, where 35 percent are in favour.

The poll also reflects participants’ opinions on the state of democracy. In general, social dissatisfaction with the functioning of the Peruvian state is high, with 80 percent being dissatisfied or very dissatisfied.

However, 60 percent of Peruvians point out that the political crisis does not justify the decision to close the parliament, a decision that only 34 percent of citizens view positively, according to the above-mentioned newspaper.

In addition, another 60 percent would not justify a military takeover through a coup, while 38 percent would rate the measure positively.

CASTILLO, LOWEST RATED BY PERUVIANS
Although former President Pedro Castillo garnered 31 percent support before the attempted dissolution of Congress, only 26 percent in the new poll think his government is good (19.5 percent) or very good (6.8 percent).

42 percent of the polls believe that the ex-president did very badly (22 percent) or badly (20 percent). Another 29 percent believe his government was neither good nor bad.

However, certain parts of the population support his decision to more or less dissolve Congress. The greatest support is reaped in rural areas with up to 52 percent support, while 48 percent of urban citizens are in favor of the attempted dissolution of Congress announced by Castillo.

When asked about the reasons why citizens are demonstrating in different parts of the country, 71 percent believe that the main reason is early elections. Second, 40 percent show their support for former President Pedro Castillo, while only 15 percent support Congress.
