The bite was so serious that the 59-year-old star needed immediate medical attention, which meant he had to be flown to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, according to a report Monday by TMZ.

The incident happened while he was gardening in or near his Malibu backyard.

On Monday, the actor posted a grisly photo to Twitter showing his very swollen finger, which had partially turned black.

The top of the finger looked black from bruises and on the sides were black lines with the number 445 written in ink.

He shared some information about the scary attack.

“Bit not from a ROUS but from a rattlesnake,” the star began. A ROUS is a rat-like creature from Princess Bride.

“Thank you to the staff at Malibu Urgent Care, LA County Fire Dept. and the staff and medical professionals of UCLAHealth for their amazing care. I’m recovering well thanks to all these wonderful people,” Elwes wrote.

And he added a prayer emoji.

TMZ claimed that his friends, who came to the actor’s aid, believed the bite’s venom was “life-threatening.”

But sources told the site Elwes will have a “full recovery”.

In his hit film Princess Bride, he was hospitalized twice: he was knocked out from a fight scene and he also broke his toe.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER A SNAKE BITE?

According to UCI Health, there’s not much anyone can do if a person has been bitten by a rattlesnake.

The bite causes pain and swelling, and sometimes muscle spasms.

“There is no recommended intervention at the site of a venomous snakebite,” shared Dr. Jeffrey Suchard, UCI Health’s Emergency Medicine Physician and Medical Toxicologist.

“Your goal is to get to a hospital as soon as possible to be evaluated for a possible antivenom treatment.”

It takes four to six hours for snake bite venom to develop into a serious situation.

He added that it’s not wise to suck out the venom seen in movies. It has proven ineffective, he added.

And he said never cut the skin to bleed out the poison because it doesn’t work and it’s harmful to the body.

Freezing the bite didn’t help either, he claimed.

Elwes was last seen in good health on April 18 at the premiere of new Nicolas Cage film The Unbearable Weight Of Massive Talent in Los Angeles. The film also stars Pedro Pascal and Tiffany Haddish.

Even icing the bite doesn’t help.

Though Cary has had a long and varied acting career, he was always most closely associated with his 1987 film The Princess Bride, which also starred Robin Wright, Mandy Patinkin, Christopher Guest, André the Giant, Peter Falk, Fred Savage and Billy Crystal starred.

There was talk of a remake.

In 2019, it was proposed to redo the film with a new remake. Variety, in an article about producer Norman Lear, 97, quoted Sony Pictures Entertainment CEO Tony Vinciquerra as saying he was interested in remaking Lear’s work.

“We have so many people coming up to us and saying, ‘We want to remake this show or that show,'” Vinciquerra said.

“Very famous people whose names I won’t use but who want to repeat The Princess Bride. Some people want to make animated versions of some sitcoms. Not a month goes by that we don’t have an idea from a very big name that wants to do something with Norman,” he added.

Lear, through his Act III production company, was a financier of The Princess Bride, directed by Rob Reiner, whom he knew from his role as Michael Stivic in All In The Family.

Act III continues to own the two Reiner-directed films he produced, The Princess Bride and Stand By Me.

The thought of a restart was vehemently dismissed on Twitter.

A tweet quoted Inigo Montoya [Patinkin] from the film, in which he said, “Prepare to die,” after hearing “that Sony is planning to remake The Princess Bride.”

Another quoted Westley [Elwes] send out a threat and read: “@sony If you remake The Princess Bride”…every child’s cry shall be yours…every woman crying “Dear God, what is that thing?” will reverberate with you forever perfect ears.”

Vizzini was quoted in another retweet of the Variety article, which read, “You fell for one of two classic mistakes! The first is never to be drawn into a land war in Asia, but just a little less well-known: Never engage in a Princess Bride reboot!’.

Others pointed out that Reiner and The Princess Bride’s book author and screenwriter William Goldman, who died at the age of 87, deserved credit for the film.

Actor and comedian Seth Rogen responded to a tweet suggesting he was among the “very famous” unnamed people who wanted to remake the film.

“I would never dare,” Rogen replied.

The Princess Bride was included in the National Film Registry in 2016 after being deemed “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant”.

In June 2020, The Prince’s Bride was brought back to life by Sophie Turner as Westley and Joe Jonas as Princess Buttercup.

The replay was filmed at their own homes amid the quarantine using their phones.

Other cast members included Hugh Jackman, Jennifer Garner, Diego Luna, Elijah Wood, Jon Hamm, Common, Chris Pine, Tiffany Haddish, Beanie Feldstein, Neil Patrick Harris, David Burtka, Jack Black, Diego Luna, Taika Waititi and Zazie Beetz.

“The actors switch roles throughout the scene, each paying homage to the Princess Bride in their own way,” Variety reported at the time.
