Tony Dungy apologizes again for tweet over litter box claims

Earlier this week, Pro Football Hall of Fame coach Tony Dungy tweeted a reference to disproved claims that schools were “putting cat boxes in school bathrooms for students who identify as cats.”

Responding to a video by The Daily Wire of Minnesota representative Sandra Feist, Dungy said, “Not all menstruating students are female,” and advocated a bill that would mandate menstrual products in the bathrooms of boys’ schools in the state. Shortly thereafter, he deleted the tweet.

Dungy faced backlash for his tweet and has retracted it. Dungy tweeted an initial apology and deleted it, but included it in another tweet on Saturday.

“Last week I posted a tweet which I subsequently deleted. I apologized but not everyone saw it. So I’ll repost my apologies here. As a Christian, I want to be a force of love for everyone. A power of healing and reconciliation – not out of hostility,” he wrote.

His original tweet read: “I saw a tweet yesterday and replied incorrectly. As a Christian, I should speak in love and in a caring and helpful way. I didn’t do that and I’m deeply sorry.”

Despite criticism, Dungy is expected to air this weekend for NBC’s coverage of the NFL playoffs.

Dungy has also been labeled a “right-wing extremist” after announcing he would be attending Friday’s March For Life in Washington, DC

The 67-year-old coached the Indianapolis Colts from 2002 to 2008 after coaching the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for six seasons. As head coach, he made the playoffs in all but three seasons.
