Julien Giard, 48, was formally charged with negligent use of a prohibited firearm, carrying a weapon for a dangerous purpose and assault with a weapon or assault on a peace officer.
Additional charges may be added in light of the investigators’ work in this case.
The crisis man was with his 75-year-old mother in a house on Saint-Zotique street on Sunday morning when he allegedly opened fire several times with a submachine gun on two patrol officers who had been called to the scene of the crime to get to the woman who attacked her will was held.
According to our information, Julien Giard was waiting for the police on solid ground with a MAC-10 submachine gun (American version of the Israeli Uzi submachine gun) equipped with an oversized magazine. This weapon is banned in Canada. He reportedly opened fire when officers arrived at the front door.
Despite the projectiles fired in their direction, the two officers would have managed to use a moment when the gun jammed to control the gunman and save his mother without anyone getting hurt.
Giard has a criminal record for various crimes. He will remain in detention pending further trials against him.
