Austria received €74 million in EU refugee funds

According to the European Commission, Austria received around €74 million in support of Ukrainian refugees. Brussels authorities today announced that more than €3.5 billion in pre-financing has been paid to EU states. Poland received the highest amount with 562 million euros.

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki recently complained to the Bild newspaper (Thursday edition): His country is home to “2.5 million refugees, to whom we Poles have opened our doors and hearts. EU did not pay us a penny for this.”

After the list, Germany received around 75.5 million euros. Hundreds of millions went to Eastern European countries such as Romania, Estonia and Hungary.

64,000 IDPs registered in Austria

The funds come from the Assistance for the Reconstruction of Cohesion and the Territories of Europe (REACT-EU). This could be used to fund food, accommodation, medical care, education or jobs for refugees arriving from Ukraine, the EU Commission said.

As of Tuesday morning, 64,183 people displaced from Ukraine were registered in Austria. 293,700 Ukrainians have entered Austria since the start of the war about two months ago, the majority – about 83% of them – having traveled.
