The building’s cool design isn’t the best choice for freezing cold weather.
There’s a lot of cool stuff to see Kyotoand it starts the second you step off the train. Kyoto station is a stylish and modern building with all the variety of restaurants and souvenir shops you would expect at the main railway hubs in Japan. But what makes it particularly beautiful is the huge central hall that lets in fresh air and natural sunlight, This gives you the feeling of being in the station and outdoors at the same time.
Unfortunately, it turns out that Kyoto Station’s unique architectural design isn’t exactly suited to snowstorms.

Japan is experiencing a cold snap, and around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, it started snowing in Kyoto. It subsided later in the afternoon but resumed in the evening and conditions worsened throughout the night.

The amount of snow dumped over the city wasn’t the only shocking aspect of the weather either. Fierce winds whipped through Japan’s former capital, and sometimes the snow didn’t fall so much as was thrown sideways until it collided with a stationary object.

▼ The station’s Mister Donut branch got a squishy redecoration despite serving up these snazzy new donuts from Toshi Yoroizuka’s collaboration.

Sometimes, as the storm subsided and the snowfall softened, it actually looked kind of picturesque, provided you were observing the scene from somewhere you were warm yourself, preferably with a nice hot cup of green tea or a mug of cocoa in the hand hands.

But as surreal as it must have been to deal with the weather inside the station, it was still far better than facing the full force of the elements outside the building.

In the station designers’ defense, snowstorms this intense are rare in Kyoto, so it’s understandable that they weren’t a major concern when planning the building. Still, we’re betting that many train commuters are happy that Kyoto’s forecast for the coming week sees just a single day of light, scattered snow.
