After a gender identity argument, a German city will allow women to swim topless like men, becoming the first in Germany to allow swimmers to go topless in the pool. The sports committee in Goettingen has recommended that municipal swimming pools be allowed to open from June 1. The decision came after a bather was asked to cover her chest at a local swimming pool, prompting protests as that person identified with the male gender .

In Germany there is a popular naturist movement known as “FKK” – short for Frei-Koerper-Kultur or Freie Körperkultur – and most saunas are mixed and require customers to undress for hygiene reasons. But the Göttingen decision is the first of its kind for public swimming pools. Some residents said the move didn’t go far enough and complained that equality wasn’t just for weekends. Local authorities have said the weekend rule is necessary to prevent swimming lessons being disrupted in schools.
