A sexton was killed and several people injured, including a priest, in a knife attack on a church in Algeciras, southern Spain, on Wednesday night, authorities said.
“The knife attack” happened “just before 8 p.m.” in the church of San Isidro in Algeciras, the interior ministry said, and not in that of San Lorenzo as it had initially mistakenly stated.
One person was killed outside the church and one injured inside the church, the ministry added.
A police source told AFP that the person killed was a sacristan, while one of the injured was a priest.
According to this source, the attacker was wearing a djellaba and was “yelling something” at the time of the attack.
Local media, based on testimonies, indicate that the attacker was armed with a machete, which he used to kill the sexton.
An investigation into suspected acts of terrorism, prosecutors told the AFP news agency.
Those investigations will be conducted by a Magistrate of the National Audience, a court with particular jurisdiction over terrorism cases, prosecutors said without giving further details.
