THE Italy Tuesday 24th dawned in mourning: the country lost Juan Carrito, a bear who made headlines for breaking into a bakery and spending the afternoon devouring biscuits. The 150 kg animal belongs to the Marsicano species, which is relatively rare and lives in the mountains of Italy. It is believed that there are only about 50 of these bears left in the country. Carrito was hit by a car on a mountain road near the town of Castel di Sangro in central Italy on the night of last Monday 23rd. “There are no words to express our sadness at what happened,” said the Abruzzo native of Lazio and Molise National Park on Instagram. “Juan Carrito was a nuisance bear, but at the park we did everything we could to give him a chance and allow him to stay free,” he added. The animal was captured last year and taken to a more remote area after the bakery was broken into. In search of food, however, this “fouryearold boy” was happy to return to his old favorite places. Before the accident, he had been seen in a ski resort over the weekend, according to news from Italian state television RAI. The bear’s name comes in part from the village of Carrito in Abruzzo, where local media reported it was first spotted crossing a road. Since carrito is a Spanish word (the short form of car), the first name Juan emerged, which is quite common in the Iberian country.
