They underscore Celac’s support for Argentine sovereignty over the Malvinas

BUENOS AIRES, January 26 (Prensa Latina) Argentina’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs today underlined the support of the 33 member countries of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac) for that country’s right of sovereignty over the Malvinas Islands.

In a special statement adopted during the VII Heads of State and Government Summit of this body, the nations represented expressed their enduring interest in the resumption of negotiations between the governments of Argentina and the United Kingdom with a view to reaching a peaceful and peaceful agreement to reach a final solution to this dispute.

In addition, they stressed the need to respect the resolutions of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly on the subject.

With this in mind, they tasked the pro-tempore presidency of Celac, inherited from St. Vincent and the Grenadines, to request UN Secretary-General António Guterres to renew efforts to fulfill the Mission of Good Offices to ensure that the talks resume.

Likewise, they urged the two states not to make any decisions implying the introduction of unilateral changes to the situation, while the Malvinas, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands and surrounding sea areas are subject to the process recommended by the General Assembly.

The statement recognizes “the Argentine government’s enduring constructive attitude and full readiness to negotiate a peaceful and definitive solution to this anachronistic colonial situation on American soil.”

In its constitution, Argentina ratifies its legitimate and inalienable sovereignty over these territories, as they are an integral part of its national territory.

The restoration of them, respecting the way of life of its inhabitants and in accordance with the principles of international law, is an enduring and inalienable goal of the people of this land, says Magna Carta.
