The President of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, received the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, at the Miraflores Presidential Palace in Caracas this Friday (01/27/2023), who is paying an official visit to the country to review the situation from the field and through numerous meetings with victims and authorities.
Türk, who arrived in the country on January 26, went to the presidency accompanied by the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Venezuela, Gianluca Rampolla, while Maduro received him along with his wife, Deputy Cilia Flores, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yvan Gil .
“I am delighted with your visit to Venezuela (…). Thank you for accepting the invitation I extended to the country,” said the President in the first seconds of the meeting, which was then followed by the media the way to the private meeting was photographed and filmed.
The official also met separately this Friday with Executive Vice President Delcy Rodríguez and National Assembly (Parliament) President pro-government Jorge Rodríguez, whose meetings revealed few details.
On January 26, the High Commissioner held a meeting with relatives of victims of extrajudicial killings and representatives of non-governmental organizations for which government agencies play a role as perpetrators in the country’s human rights system.
That visit is expected to end on January 28, when Türk will make a final statement and answer some questions to the press from Simón Bolívar International Airport, which serves Caracas from where he will depart the country.
