The US and Taiwan will hold presidential elections next year – this is a possibility, writes the general. A representative of the US Department of Defense is against it.
A four-star US Air Force general is predicting a war with China in 2025. “I hope I’m wrong,” Gen. Mike Minihan wrote in a Friday memo, dated Feb. 1, addressing everyone commanders of the Air Mobility Command. “My gut tells me we’ll fight in 2025.”
The US and Taiwan held presidential elections the following year. This gives Chinese President Xi Jinping the opportunity to take military action, Minihan explained his prediction.
A US Department of Defense official said Minihan’s comments “did not represent the agency’s position on China”. The People’s Republic of China does not recognize Taiwan as an independent state, but considers the island its own territory.
