The force of the tremors destroyed many houses. Iranian media speak of a considerable extent of destruction in neighboring villages. In Khoy, parts of falling buildings also crushed cars.

In the freezing temperatures, people ran into the streets in panic. In some parts of the city, electricity was cut. Rescue teams from other cities rushed to the earthquake area. Snowfall makes its use difficult.

Tremors also recorded in other countries

The quake occurred around 9:45 pm local time. According to the US Geological Survey, it had a magnitude of 5.9 on the Richter scale at a depth of 10 kilometers. Tremors were also felt in eastern Turkey, Armenia and Azerbaijan.

It was the third earthquake in the Khoy region in a few months. Just ten days ago, around 120 people were injured after a magnitude 5.4 tremor, most of them as a result of panic. After the earthquake in October, there were over 1,000.
