Nineteen athletes will represent the Quebec region in regional alpine skiing competitions this season, a record for Skibec.
The organization that develops the talent of the province’s hopes in the Appalachia Capitale-Nationale and Chaudière announced Thursday the makeup of its Avalanche regional team at the Le Relais station.
At the same time he started the 53rd season of the Grands Circuits Volvo de Québec. This year, until March 26th, 21 days of competition are on the calendar for the age groups U8 to U16.
The large Skibec delegation will be led by Marie-Jeanne Cazes and Louis-Thomas Cantin, the two skiers in the program who have been selected to take part in the next Canada Games. Eight athletes from the regional team tried their luck in qualifying.
“The Quebec region is particularly well represented this year. Not only do we have a record number of up-and-coming skiers, we also have two hopefuls selected to represent the region at the Canada Games this winter,” said Skibec CEO Antoine Beaudoin.
goal achieved
Cantin from Lac-Beauport belonged to the elite of alpine skiing only two years ago. Here he is among the group of 14 skiers who will represent Quebec at the Canada Games.
“It was already my challenge to compete in Skibec and it is a challenge that I have mastered. My second challenge was to go to the Canada Games and a second challenge is also done,” said the young man, who already has a third goal in mind, in an interview with TVA Nouvelles.
“I would like to win a medal. Coming home with a medal would be pretty good, my goal,” said Louis-Thomas Cantin in conclusion.
For the latter, as for Cazes, many efforts were made to bring them among the elite. Both finished fourth in qualifying, which bodes well for the future.
“They are very proud of it because I think they have put in a lot of effort for several years, both in physical training and in skiing. So for them it is effort that is rewarded,” said her coach Élissa Algora.
At the provincial level, Skibec is among the elite teams in Ski Québec Alpine, along with organizations from Estrie, the Laurentians and the Outaouais.
The Canada Games 2023 will be held on Prince Edward Island from February 18th to March 5th.
