The months of January are no longer the musical deserts of bygone times. New things abound. Bundled here are ten tracks that have warmed our hearts in this usually colder month.

AWMMEN, Miss Sassoeur

(CB) – This second excerpt from the next album by Myriam Bois (Giggles, February 10), aka Miss Sassoeur, sounds like a jubilant bonanza. Against a gospel background, Miss Sassoeur reminds us that after the rain there is good weather. And good music too.

THE BLOCK TOUR, Michael Rivard

(RGM) – The songwriter’s first original song since 2019, this track is a glimpse into the past filled with tenderness. The “ti-cul Villeray” is celebrating its 50th anniversary this winter with a tour of the same name. In the hope that he will continue to push “his luck” for a few more years.

GUIDE, duma

(SEN) – The piece Leitmotiv has everything that has enchanted us about the singer-songwriter for so many years: a catchy chorus, bursts of hope and electronic touches that immediately make you smile and dance, arms in the air.

FOR THE OTHERS, Carolan Boili

(CB) – A few delicate piano tones, simple and open percussion, an interpretation of lively sensibility: in the alternative pop niche, this artist from Saint-Raymond de Portneuf is one to watch.

ARTIFICIAL, Marilu

(RGM) – Before Marilou founded her “culinary empire” Trois fois par jour, Marilou made a name for herself as a singer. Now she’s finally getting back to her first love. And the return is pretty compelling if we rely on the three recently released extracts, Rosie, The smoke of the candles, and The artifices. Pretty tender ballads.

EYELIDS, alex dore

(SEN) – It’s soft, it’s soothing and it touches us like a sea breeze. Taken from the mini-album Île, this track represents the essence of this first and certainly not last opus that makes a gentle journey.

ROCK BAND, Bright

(CB) – A mini Freddy Mercury sleeps in Étienne Côté, and among the glam-rock traits of Lumière, with Rock Band he offers a journey through time that contrasts pleasantly in the current Quebec music landscape.

ELEGY, Alexandra Streliski

(RGM) – The pianist is very touching in this “sad song full of pure love”. The piano mixes skillfully with the violin and the result hits us straight to the heart. I can’t wait for the new album Neo-Romance on March 31st.

BROOKLYN IS NOT BIG ENOUGH Jason Bajada

Photo archive, Chantal Poirier

(SEN) – A nice gift in French from singer-songwriter Jason Bajada, who translated his song ‘Brooklyn Isn’t Big Enough For the Both of Us’ from his latest album, Crushed Grapes.

LOVE, Jean Michel Blais

(CB) – It’s not really a new song as the original version of Amour appeared on Jean-Michel Blais’ orchestral album released in 2022. Reduced to its simplest expression on the piano, its rendition loses none of its evocative power.
