Hundreds of people took to the streets in several cities in the United States (USA) this Saturday to protest the killing of young African American boy Tire Nichols by five police officers in Memphis, Tennessee.
Demonstrations took place in cities such as Los Angeles, Chicago, Memphis and New York, among others, with the slogan to denounce police violence.
Nichols, who was 29, died on January 10 as a result of being beaten by five police officers after he was arrested for a traffic violation. His case gained notoriety when a video showing the beating was released.
In Chicago, where temperatures were recorded below freezing, protesters went to the police station headquarters, where they chanted slogans such as, “The killer cops have to go.”
Most marches were peaceful, for example in Los Angeles, Washington, DC, Seattle, Detroit or Atlanta.
In New York, local media reported that several people were arrested after staging protests in Union Square, Grand Central and Times Square, where they encountered police vehicles.
At the rallies that took place in Memphis, among other things, the slogans caught the eye: “Justice for Tyre”, “Without justice there is no peace”.
Police officers involved in the deadly attack were separated from society and charged with second-degree murder, aggravated assault, aggravated kidnapping, misconduct and suppression of office.
