#1 worldwide in sales in 2022

Toyota has just released its total sales for 2022 and retains its crown on a global scale with nearly 10.45 million units. Of course, this figure includes sales of the luxury brand Lexus, but also of the subsidiaries Daihatsu and Hino.

The Japanese giant is still well ahead of the Volkswagen group, whose global sales last year hit 8.3 million vehicles, their worst result in the last decade. Hyundai, for its part, sold 6.8 million vehicles.

For Toyota, it’s still a 0.1% drop in sales compared to 2021, with the 2.3% increase in exports being eroded by the 9.6% decline in the domestic market.

It’s also worth noting that Toyota’s 2.1 million vehicles sold in North America in 2022 represent a nearly 10% year-over-year decrease. Due to this weak performance, General Motors (approx. 2.3 million vehicles) was again number one on the continent.

Facing various supply issues throughout the year, Toyota acknowledged in a statement that the situation at many factories remains difficult but expects it to improve in the second half of 2023, as many other automakers and market analysts believe, by the way.

The Toyota brand is also still very well represented in the list of the best-selling vehicles in the world. According to statistics compiled by Focus2Move from 162 countries, the top 5 for 2022 are as follows (change from 2021 in brackets):

  • Toyota Corolla: 1.12 million (-2%)
  • Toyota RAV4: 871,000 (-14%)
  • Ford F-Series: 786,000 (-9%)
  • Tesla Model Y: 759,000 (+88%)
  • Toyota Camry: 677,000 (-3%)
