Researchers from about 50 Canadian universities have published work done with scientists from China’s National University of Defense Technology, part of the Chinese military, according to a study by the US Strategic Intelligence Society, Strider Technologies.

In all, more than 240 collaborative papers were written by members from 10 Canadian universities. Some of the cooperating Chinese experts specialize in missile guidance systems and automated surveillance, among other things.

In this top 10, McGill University ranks 3rd behind the University of Waterloo in Ontario and the University of Alberta.

The Montreal School, in collaboration with this Chinese Army unit, has published 73 scholarly articles from 2005 to 2022, including 25 since 2017. The university is “as open as possible to collaborations from around the world,” responded one of its spokespersons.

Concordia University ranks 9th in this ranking with 29 publications published between 2005 and 2022, 19 of them since 2017.

According to the Canadian Security Intelligence Service, Beijing is reportedly increasingly using joint university research programs to obtain better technologies that give it an economic and military advantage.
