In a march to mark the 347th anniversary of the founding of the university, the members of the various faculties used slogans and banners to express their rejection of Mazariegos, who they believe had come into office last year through election fraud.
“Long live San Carlos, Fuera Mazariegos, join the fight, light the fire” was one of the most listened to songs on the tour, which started from Paraninfo to Pasaje Rubio in the historical center of the capital.
The protesters also condemned the actions of the Supreme University Council (CSU), which recently approved the expulsion of student leader Camilo García from that body and from Usac, an action seen as falling outside of constitutional rights and duties.
Along the same lines, graduates from various academic units also issued an urgent statement on Tuesday in response to what they described as an “inadmissible and arbitrary decision.”
“Our solidary support for the worthy and democratically elected advisor,” says the document.
The 22 members of the CSU hid in the shadow of the secret ballot so as not to show their faces, the note said, urging the university community to strengthen dignified resistance to the expulsion of Garcías Alma Mater and other illegals Actions related to Mazariegos’ electoral fraud, they pointed out.
The Association of Guatemalan Journalists also joined in condemning the resolution against García, deeming it “completely illegal and null and void.”
Since the middle of last year, student groups have maintained the seizure of various USAC facilities in resistance.
Two of these were delivered this month as a gesture of goodwill at the start of a dialogue table with the CSU; However, this has not happened.
