Recalling his double against Unión Minas that gave the U the Apertura 2000 title, we take a look back at ‘Beto’ Carranza’s career and tell you what he’s currently up to.
Luis Alberto Carranza or “Beto”, as he is known in Peru, has had a football career that many would envy. He debuted in racing very young and showed outstanding performances. Then he went to Boca Juniors and was directed by Oscar Washington Tabarezto make history with the ‘xeneize’ team. After that he arrived in Independiente where things weren’t going well so he had to reach Saint Lawrence. He was also not able to convince in the Almagrino team and began a path that led him to Peru.
Here he earned the esteem and affection of many, especially the cream fans. Forward, 173 cm tall, Carranza arrived in Peru in 2000 at the age of 27. As in Boca juniors —He joined the Auriazul team that ended a 10-year drought—He was part of a historic U squad: the one that has won the championship three times.

Merengues fans remember him with great affection for the double he scored union mines in the Daniel Alcides Carrión stadium, at 4,378 meters above sea level. The second of these goals served to turn the game around and award the students the Apertura title. This was the first step for the cream team to win everything they have played at national level.
With the U he scored a further 3 goals in the 21 games he played dressed in cream. Already with the triple championship in his pocket, like some of the Universitario players, ‘Beto’ didn’t stay in the merengue shop the following season. The Argentinian continued his globetrotting path in countries such as Scotland and Paraguay.

In the European country he played three seasons Dundee F.C and a semester in Raith Rover. After playing again for his country in 2004 and 2005, Carranza spent the second half of 2005 playing for Guarani in Paraguay. His career ended in Argentina’s promotion where he defended Almirante Brown’s colours.
What is “Beto” Carranza doing at the moment?
Carranza withdrew Admiral Brown from Argentina, a team that played in the second division. Although he lives in Argentina, he remains linked to Peru thanks to his job: he is a players’ representative.
In one of his recent interviews with Crónica de Paraguay, “Beto” revealed more details about his current facet. In it, he pointed out that although he represents football players, he is not a FIFA agent. He even clarified that he doesn’t always do it: “I do it when one of my friends asks me to,” he emphasized.

One of his most media episodes in representation was the frustrated negotiation of Ángel Comizzo’s contract extension as DT of the Universitario de Deportes. “Unfortunately, we didn’t reach an agreement and Ángel will stop being U coach. He’s sad and hurt by the players and fans,” he remarked in November 2019.
