Dozens of Chinese military planes and ships spotted in Taiwanese waters and airspace

According to defense officials, the Chinese military on Wednesday made one of its biggest incursions into Taiwan in recent weeks.

Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense said around 3 a.m., 34 Chinese military aircraft and nine naval vessels were spotted near the island nation

“The Armed Forces have been monitoring the situation and have tasked CAP aircraft, naval vessels and land-based missile systems to respond to these activities,” the ministry tweeted.

Twenty of the planes spotted “crossed the Taiwan Strait centerline and entered Taiwan’s southwestern ADIZ (Air Defense Identification Zone)”.

Chinese military incursions are almost a daily occurrence. Beijing has continued to fly military planes near Taiwan to reiterate its stance that the island is part of China.

In late December, China sent a record 71 planes and seven ships to Taiwan – the largest such military exercise of 2022.
