US forces intercept thousands of assault rifles, ammunition and anti-tank missiles from Iran

The US has seized thousands of rifles and nearly two dozen anti-tank missiles that were shipped from Iran and transported via shipping routes.

US Central Command (CENTCOM) reported Tuesday that CENTCOM officials — working with international naval partners — successfully intercepted the shipment of over 3,000 rifles from Iran to Yemen.

In addition to the guns, the authorities seized almost 600,000 rounds of ammunition and 23 anti-tank missiles.

The January 15 ban took place in the Gulf of Oman, where CENTCOM and its naval partners seized the ship’s cargo.

The area where illegal arms smuggling was discovered was a historic trade route.

A French warship stopped a suspected smuggling ship off the Yemen coast on January 15 and sent French special forces to board and search the ship.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the soldiers found over 3,000 assault rifles, 500,000 rounds of ammunition and 20 anti-tank missiles. The US, French and British navies have coordinated their efforts to block Iran’s smuggling operations in the region.

Iran has been trying for months to provide deadly aid to Yemen’s Houthi rebels, even as Yemen’s civil war remains under a ceasefire.
