The Foreign Ministry of the Lula government (PT) and the French government agree on a date for an official visit by President Emmanuel Macron to Brazil.
After years of strained relations with Jair Bolsonaro’s (PL) government, the Brazilian government has focused on rebuilding good diplomatic relations with France. The French representative even criticized the fires in the Amazon and suggested taking the issue to the G7 to seek solutions in the international forum. At the time, the Brazilian government at the time saw the Frenchman’s statement as a violation of sovereignty. In addition to exchanging barbs with Macron, former President Jair Bolsonaro endorsed an offensive comment against France’s First Lady Brigitte Macron.
Now Macron is building on an expected rapprochement with Itamaraty. The two countries are common allies especially on environmental issues such as global warming and deforestation in the Amazon. There is also a rapprochement between the two countries against antidemocratic actions.
Brazil is also read as a country with good diplomatic relations with important and diverse nations around the world, such as the United States, Russia, and China. In the case of the war between Russia and Ukraine, this transit becomes even more relevant in the search for peace agreements.
Preparations for the visit will begin next week. French Chancellor Catherine Colonna will arrive in Brazil on February 8 for a meeting with the Brazilian government. During the visit, the French official will have to agree on the details and set a date for Macron’s visit.
Talks suggest the French head of state’s trip is set to take place in the first half of 2023.
Relationship. Lula and Macron are in frequent contact. The Brazilian President, who was received by the French even before the election victory, called the Paris ally again last Friday (27).
Phone call. They talked about the January 8 coup act and the war between Russia and Ukraine. The Brazilian government said the country will not take part in hostilities against Russia but is ready to take an active part in the search for peace, UOL reported.
With Macron, another European head of state will visit the President. Chancellor Olaf Scholz visited the country this week. They agreed on the details of investing in donations from the Germans in the Amazon fund.
Reconstruction. Itamaraty has pursued the goal of reinstating Brazil as a relevant global player after the “trauma” caused by Jair Bolsonaro’s (PL) government in international relations. The bilateral relations strained by Bolsonaro, especially with neighboring Latin American countries, are to be reestablished.
For this reason, President Lula’s first trip was to Argentina and Uruguay, where he met with heads of state from both countries and international authorities.
