Activists fleeing: ‘last generation’ complains of double standards

In the debate over two climate activists being criticized for taking a long-haul flight to Asia, the “Last Generation” climate protection movement for its part complains of double standards.

It can be understood that it triggers negative feelings when “last generation” protesters get on a plane, the organization said today. But it is also a double standard, for example, to unearth the city of Lützerath as a “Climate Chancellor”.

The debate was sparked by a report in the Bild newspaper yesterday that two climate activists should have appeared in court in Stuttgart because last autumn they and other activists blocked a federal highway and were trapped there.

According to the report, it is a woman who should have reported and a man who was accused. Instead of showing up, they flew to Bali and caused around 7.9 tons of CO2, the paper calculated. Then an argument broke out on social media. Individual politicians also spoke out critically.

Long-distance trips agreed with the court

The two did not fly to Bali, but to Thailand to “stay there for many months”, according to “Last Generation”. His absence was agreed with the court. The competent district court could not yet be contacted for confirmation.

Individual behavior is still important, on the contrary, climate activists said in a statement. Engaging politically against climate breakdown and changing your own life in the process often go hand in hand. Such a life change is not a prerequisite for protest.
