A garbage truck with a 100% electric dumpster drove through the streets of Lac-Saint-Jean this week for a trial period.
The situation in Quebec is unusual. Based in Lévis, Boivin Evolution (BEV) claims to be the first company to offer automated, 100% electric waste collection bins. The Lion Electric Company based in Saint-Jérôme also offers a similar technology.
The two companies have received orders primarily in Europe or elsewhere in North America.
But in the province of La Belle, the use of this type of truck is still in its infancy.
The Jeannois company Groupe Coderr, which tested the BEV vehicle, said that the extremely cold temperatures that fell on the region made it possible to carry out “the first tests in real conditions”.
BEV’s truck reduces energy costs by 80 percent, maintenance costs by 60 percent and greenhouse gas emissions by 85 tons per truck per year, the company said when launching its model in March 2022.
The vehicle, which runs on electricity, also significantly increases the permissible payload.
One of the goals of Groupe Coderr, headquartered in Alma, Lac-Saint-Jean, is to reduce the amount of residues and greenhouse gases released into the environment.
