Teenage girl killed by shark in Australia

A 16-year-old girl died on Saturday after being attacked by a shark while swimming in a river in Western Australia.

Originally from the Australian city of Perth, Western Australia, the girl was first reported to be riding jet skis with friends at the time of the incident, the BBC reported, after which her death was determined by police authorities to have been pulled from the water, in the Swan River, in perth

West Australian Police authorities say the teenager may have tried to jump into the water to have fun with the dolphins she is said to have seen nearby.

However, they had warned swimmers to take “extra precautions” in certain areas of the river. Fisheries experts said it’s rather uncommon to see sharks in the Swan River.

In fact, it would be the first fatal shark attack on the river in 100 years. The incident is described by police as very dramatic and the victim’s family said they were “absolutely devastated”.
