Sony just announced on Monday that the PlayStation 5’s Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) feature will be rolling out this week. Some players were able to test this new technology on a large number of compatible games. Apparently it delivers the promised boost in performance.

What is Variable Refresh Rate or VRR support? How do I activate it?

The VRR is first of all an acronym from the variable refresh rate. As the name suggests, it represents the variable refresh rate applied to an image to improve its clarity. Its main purpose is to eliminate screen tearing, a visual problem that causes the image to flicker on a TV.

It should be noted that the VRR is a feature of the latest generation of televisions or monitors that use the HDMI 2.1 standard. Sony has therefore indicated in its announcement that this support will be activated automatically for everyone who has a compatible screen.

If you want to make sure this is the case for your gear, simply go to your PS5 Settings under the Display and Video tab. In the Video Output section, you can see the setting for VRR. It’s just above HDR. From there it is still possible to disable the automatic settings of this technology. You can also apply it to incompatible games.

Here is the list of games already compatible with this technology

During its announcement, Sony revealed that some games will receive the patches to support VRR. We still have to wait for the next few weeks. In contrast, all of Insomniac’s PS5 titles already use this feature. This concerns in particular:

The end of March mentioned by Sony will only be one. The Japanese manufacturer will in fact roll out this update from this last week of April.

Conclusion

Bringing this feature to the PS5s allows this console to adapt to Microsoft’s Xbox X and S series. They have offered VRR since day one. This feature intensifies the visual performance of games by reducing or eliminating screen tearing.
