An American couple is slapped with a mind-boggling $860 bill at a notorious Mykonos restaurant

An American couple have been slapped with a staggering $860 bill after a meal and drinks at a notorious Mykonos restaurant where the owner defends exorbitant prices.

Jessica Yarnall, 31, and Adam Hagaun, 30, from Montana, say they thought the cocktails would cost €25 each when they ordered at DK Oyster Bar on Platys Gialos beach in Mykonos.

However, the couple say after enjoying two mojitos, four crab legs and a Greek salad, they were billed for a staggering €800.

When they disputed the bill, they claimed the staff made a “shot glass” drink, which they said was a sample of the €25 mojito, and told them their mojitos were different and €100 cost per drink.

It’s not the first time the restaurant has surprised tourists. Alex and Lindsey Breen, 40, from Canada, were stunned by a €400 bill after grabbing a “quick snack” on their honeymoon in May.

Hairstylist Jessica said she was incredulous at the shocking sum, but said the staff insisted they pay, so they settled the bill in cash and left.

Jessica and construction worker Adam had saved up for the trip for two years and had traveled to Athens, Mykonos and Santorini in May 2022 before flying back to Montana, USA.

She stressed that they only sat down to eat because the menu made it seem affordable.

Jessica said: “There were waiters outside trying to get people in. They asked if we wanted something to eat and we said we would get a drink.

“I had asked for a priced menu to make sure it was in our price range. The menu made it seem like a really affordable place to eat.

“We sat down and talked about whether or not to eat. They were very pushy. We thought maybe that’s how it is and we didn’t want to be rude.

“We asked what was good and they said crab legs and a Greek salad so we said ok let’s think about it,” then they brought out rolls.

“We told them we hadn’t ordered anything yet and they said we had. There was a little language barrier so we think when we said we would think about it he thought we meant yes so when we were trying to figure out how much it would cost they started bringing out the food and they said we definitely ordered it.

“It was a powerful moment where we didn’t want to be weird, but we also tried to relax. We didn’t want to get in a fight with a server.

“As he walked away I asked my friend if he was ok eating it and he said yes, I told him it would probably be a bit pricey and he said we should just do it.

“I thought the worst case scenario would be $300. We expected it to be a bit more expensive but not as much as with the quality of the food.

‘Adam got the bill and said “it’s bad”. It was over €800 and I was like “absolutely not” so I went to the manager and said I was really confused and wanted to see an itemized bill.

Speaking about the bill, Jessica said she googled their menu and showed it was €25 for a mojito, but her bill said €100.

Jessica said: “It looked like €38 for a crab leg, it was €38 for a gram of crab leg and there is a minimum order quantity.

“He came to the bar and slammed a shot glass on the floor and said, ‘That’s a €25 mojito, you ordered a €100 mojito,’ and I told him I didn’t and that I didn’t.” had choice.

“They charged 100 euros for the rudest mojito, the mint wasn’t nice. It was disgusting.

‘He said we’d pay the bill. He didn’t want to have a conversation. They said we had to pay the bill.

“We were so flabbergasted we thought we’d pay the damn bill and get out of there. We were super excited.’

On their website, DK Oyster on Platys Gialos Beach is described as a “destination for luxury and style” in “one of the best destinations in the world”.

Jessica says when they were at the beach bar, they saw other customers “freaking out” about their own bills.

Jessica says thanks to the astronomical bill, the couple had to cut spending for the rest of their trip.

She claims that not only was it the most expensive meal they had, it was also the worst.

Jessica said: “The Greek salad was veg and oil so not complicated but it wasn’t the best we had, it got disgusting very quickly. I’m not a chef but I think the crab legs were tasty [bad]it wasn’t amazing and wasn’t even worth €100.

“The holiday was so good except for this experience, everything else was 11 out of 10. We saved a lot for the trip. We saved for two years. When we go we want to have a good experience.

“When we got back to the hotel, someone on the island heard from me that day. God bless my friend who said not to let the money ruin the rest of the trip but I did a tiktok video and like ten reviews then we tried to make the most of the rest of the trip.

“We could have hosted some nicer dinners and spent the money elsewhere that we decided. We would have spent a lot of money in other places and not paid attention to expenses.

One reviewer wrote: “Don’t be fooled by the free loungers on the beach. They reimburse by charging you for overpriced drinks and food! Their mojito is $58 a pop and it’s not even good.’

Another says: “I don’t get hot under the collar since I was there and did that. This is a notice not to enter these premises under any circumstances.

“Unless you just want to give away your money on ridiculously overpriced food and drink. Seriously beware of this money pit.’

DK Oyster Bar owner Dimitrios Kalamaras said Jessica’s account was inaccurate, but refused to specify what was inaccurate in it – but did concede that some of her charges “could be perceived as high prices”.

In August, another couple named Lindsay and Alex Breen made headlines when they claimed to have been hit at the same restaurant with a staggering €400 bill for a beer, a spritz of Aperol and a dozen oysters.

Recruiter Lindsay said they were “in disbelief” when they saw the bill as the restaurant staff had given them a drinks menu that didn’t list the prices.

The couple also claim that instead of presenting them with the bill at the table, joiner Alex was taken to a back room to pay and when he asked for a breakdown, they showed him their computer screen, which was all in Greek.

However, Mr Kalamaras defended his prices at the time, boasting that they were simply “over budget” for some of his visitors.

Mr Kalamaras said in August: “This false claim [made by Lindsay Breen and husband Alex] was used against our restaurant so many times by dozens of anonymous users on Trip Advisor that we decided to put up three giant plaques at the entrance of the restaurant displaying the menu and prices.

“I thought that this way, if the reviews are actually from real customers, our guests would at least have an idea of our price range to make sure they check the menu thoroughly before ordering.

“Each time I have received a complaint like this, always from anonymous users via Trip Advisor, I have consulted with the staff and reminded them that ensuring procedures are carefully followed is vital to our reputation.

“They have always assured me that they play by the rules. So I used Tripadvisor to encourage our guests to always review the menu and prices carefully.

“I cannot prevent every single person from entering our premises and explain the importance of such a practice. It would be ridiculous.

“I understand that some people find our prices over their budget and I fully respect their opinion even if they don’t appreciate the value of our services, our cuisine, our concept and our experience.

“We believe that the value of the experience on offer is high and we have no intention of explaining why we charge more than a supermarket or traditional tavern, which can be quite wonderful but is certainly a very different concept from ours. “
