Keith Appling, former Michigan State basketball player, pleaded guilty to murder and firearms charges in the 2021 shooting death of a Detroit man, according to the Detroit Free Press.
Appling pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and a firearms crime charge in a Wayne County, Michigan court in the 2021 murder of 66-year-old Clyde Edmonds. He agreed to serve a sentence of 18 to 40 years in prison and will be sentenced in March. Two other firearms charges are set to be dismissed as part of his pleading.
Apple was arrested in 2021 after police said he got into an argument with Edmonds, his mother’s cousin, over a gun. The argument reportedly turned physical, with Appling allegedly firing multiple shots at Edmonds – who was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
He allegedly fled the scene with his girlfriend Natalie Bannister, who police later said lied to investigators about what happened. She pleaded guilty to lying to a police officer last year and was sentenced to 18 months probation.
Apple played at Michigan State from 2010 to 2014, averaging 10.6 points and 4.5 assists per game throughout his career there. The former Michigan Mr. Basketball played briefly for the Orlando Magic, appearing in five Play before it’s canceled.
