Quebec | Anti-trams will not appeal

(Quebec) Opponents of the Quebec streetcar project, who were dismissed in the Supreme Court in January, have decided to drop their appeal. However, they promise to continue their efforts to cancel this project of around 4 billion, which must be completed in 2028.

Quebec Deserves Better (QMM) had until Friday to appeal. The group of opponents said on Wednesday that they had decided to turn the page after discussions with lawyer Guy Bertrand, who is representing them.

“An appeal process could take months or even years and would involve significant court costs. During this period, the city is accelerating the pace of preparatory work and does not hesitate to grind down a forest area and clear a wetland in the Legendre sector,” QMM said in a press release.

The opponents had completely lost their recourse claims before the Supreme Court. On January 17, Judge Clément Samson did not accept any of her arguments.

QMM particularly criticized former mayor Régis Labeaume, who did not include the tram in his program in the 2017 election: “The courts have no power to intervene in relation to the violation of electoral obligations,” the judge wrote.

The QMM spokesman promises to remain committed to stopping the project, which has since been taken over by Mayor Bruno Marchand and funded by Quebec and Ottawa. “We’re closing the legal component, we lost, that’s fine. But we will continue to stand up, be vigilant and be watchdogs,” said Donald Charette.
