YouTube CEO steps down after nearly a decade in office

(CNN) YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki said Thursday that she is “resigning” from her leadership role at the company after running the video-sharing platform for nearly a decade.

In a blog post, Wojcicki said she plans to “start a new chapter focused on my family, my health and personal projects that are close to my heart.”

Wojcicki was associated with Google, YouTube’s parent company, from the very beginning, when the two founders were working in their garage in California to build a search engine. She later became Google’s 16th employee and has worked for the company for almost 25 years.

“Susan has a unique place in Google’s history and has made the most incredible contributions to products used by people everywhere,” Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin said in a statement. “We are so grateful for everything she has done over the past 25 years.”

Wojcicki was YouTube’s CEO for nine years. She will be succeeded by Neal Mohan, YouTube’s current chief product officer.

“With everything we’re doing for shorts, streaming and subscriptions, along with the promises of AI, YouTube’s most exciting possibilities lie ahead and Neal is the right person to lead us,” Wojcicki wrote.

Wojcicki oversaw YouTube during the internet’s pivotal transition to social media, but also when online platforms were increasingly scrutinized for the spread of misinformation, hate speech, and other harmful content.

She added that although she left her position, she would continue to work with some YouTube teams and advise Google CEO Sundar Pichai, providing “advice and guidance for Google and the Alphabet company portfolio.”

“I’m so proud of everything we’ve achieved,” Wojcicki wrote. “It was exciting, meaningful and all consuming.”
