Boris Becker sentenced to 2.5 years in prison for bankruptcy fraud

Former tennis star Boris Becker has been sentenced to two and a half years in prison for hiding over $3 million in assets and loans when filing for bankruptcy.

The 54-year-old was sentenced to up to seven years in prison for violating the Bankruptcy Act in four counts.

Corresponding Natalie Pirk by BBC Sports, he is expected to serve half of his sentence.

Becker won six Grand Slam tournaments as a player, including three Wimbledon titles. He became the youngest male major singles champion in 1985 when he won Wimbledon aged 17.

After his playing career, he spent some time coaching Novak Djokovic and working as a commentator for the BBC.

In 2017, Becker was declared bankrupt over an unpaid loan of around €4.6 million ($5 million) from a private bank.

It was later discovered that he had secretly transferred significant amounts of money from his business accounts to other personal accounts, including to his ex-wife, Barbara, and his estranged wife, Sharlely. He also concealed a loan of 825,000 euros, his shares in a technology company and a share in a property in Germany.

Becker had already been convicted of tax evasion and attempted tax evasion in Germany in 2002, but his two-year prison sentence was suspended.
