‘He’s a challenge’: Kim Basinger opens up about ex Alec Baldwin during ‘Red Table Talk’

Few people have more insight into actor Alec Baldwin than his ex-wife Kim Basinger. The 68-year-old actress recently appeared on an episode of Jada Pinkett Smith’s Red Table Talk to discuss her interactions with Baldwin and their disagreement on co-parenting.

Basinger described their divorce as “heavy-duty” and “very loud,” the Daily Mail reported. She and Baldwin were married for nearly ten years, from 1993 to 2002. They had one daughter, Ireland Basinger, who also appeared on Red Table Talk to talk about her father.

“Parenthood can be difficult, and Ireland has the anxiety issues that she’s had, was that a difficult process with Alec, or were you guys able to sort of agree on how to deal with that?” Smith asked.

“Eye level?” Basinger replied with a grin. “No. No, it wasn’t… Alec’s a weird guy. We’re all fine and we all get along, whatever. But he was… he’s a challenge.”

“We’ve had our challenges,” the LA Confidential actress continued. “And I don’t think Alec was emotionally or mentally available for those kinds of conversations. You know, Alec has a very different way of going about his life.”

Ireland jumped in and explained how her father’s methods of coping with stress differ from other people’s.

“He’s very good at dealing with fear, but he’s someone who grew up in a family that also suppresses that or tells him he’s weak because he feels that way,” explained the 26-year-old model.

“There are things I would go to my dad for, but if I ever tried to have that conversation with him in any way, I don’t think he would be able to really absorb any of it,” Ireland continued away.

“He can’t really sympathize but it’s not his fault and he’s gotten a lot better. I mean, I think he’s really been repressing his fear, like he was until recently. He really grappled with things that were kind of thrown at him. He was forced to finally come to terms with these things,” she concluded.

Ireland was likely referring to the fatal shooting on the set of the film “Rust” when Baldwin held a prop cannon that discharged, hitting and killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injuring director Joel Souza. The consequences of the incident, for which Baldwin is not to blame, were extreme.

The Daily Mail reported that Basinger and Baldwin broke up because of his “hot temper and allegedly uncontrollable anger,” according to her father. The audio of a voicemail he left for Ireland, who was then a young child, became public and caused an absolute scandal for the “30 Rock” actor.

Because Ireland didn’t answer the phone at the appointed time, Baldwin berated her and called her a “rude little pig” in the recorded message.
