Norovirus is characterized by vomiting, diarrhea and pain and cramps in the stomach, we can read on the Canadian government website.
But how to avoid it? As with most viruses, good hand hygiene remains an effective solution to deter germs.
“Wash your hands after using the toilet, before eating, or cooking,” says Dr. Rachael Lee in an interview with Heathline.
The expert adds that frequent disinfecting of surfaces in the home can also help avoid norovirus.
Also, while hand sanitizers are helpful in fighting off germs, alcohol-based sanitizers may not work for norovirus.
“It’s best to wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds,” adds Dr. Lee added.
The CDC* reports that fruits and vegetables and seafood should also be washed thoroughly and kept at home for at least two days after symptoms have ended.
In addition, the American organization suggests not cooking for others if they are infected with the virus to stop its spread.
