A family outraged that bedsores were passed over in silence

The family of a CHSLD Saint-Maurice resident in Shawinigan is angry. She claims that staff did not update her on the condition of her mother, who had significant bedsores when she was taken to the hospital.

Yves Thibodeau and his brother say their mother was neglected. Significant bedsores and even blisters were found near the buttocks of the 90-year-old lady. Those wounds were discovered at Shawinigan Hospital, according to his family.

“The hospital staff was surprised and so was I. We didn’t expect that. I was very angry. These are things that are controllable and preventable,” said Yves Thibodeau.

Denise Milot, who suffers from cognitive impairment, was rushed to Shawinigan Hospital last week to be treated for a kidney infection. His relatives claim that the staff at the CHSLD Saint-Maurice never informed them about the bedsores.

This isn’t the first time the family has denounced the care provided at CHSLD Saint-Maurice. In 2021, Yves Thibodeau campaigned for his mother to be able to defecate in a bedpan chair and not in incontinence pants.

At the moment the family has contacted a lawyer and is considering filing a complaint. “We should not accept such a situation. These are wounds that should have been treated and the family should have been warned. For us as a law firm, it is negligence,” says Me François-David Bernier.

The CIUSSS does not have the same assessment of the situation after fact-checking and meeting with the medical team. It is reiterated that family members must be notified if a change in a resident’s situation is detected. There are also monitoring mechanisms to ensure the quality of care and services offered to customers.

When pressure ulcers are involved, teams are trained to act quickly. If they are more complex, a specialist in this type of treatment will be consulted.
