European giant Airbus plans to hire more than 800 people in Canada this year, including about 700 in Quebec, mostly at its Mirabel facilities.
Of those, around 500 will be new jobs, including 450 in Quebec, a company spokeswoman, Amélie Forcier, told the Journal yesterday.
At Mirabel, Airbus assembles A220 aircraft, formerly Bombardier’s C-Series. A subsidiary of the group, Stelia Aéronautique, also operates a component factory in the airport city.
Positions are available in several areas: component manufacturing, assembly, flight operations, quality control, engineering, IT and customer service.
Unionized positions are paid between $37,000 and $105,000 per year under the applicable collective bargaining agreement.
“Our goal is to give a third of the positions to young graduates and young professionals. In addition, we remain committed to the goal of 33% of hiring and promotions being women,” Airbus Canada CEO Benoît Schultz said in a press release.
In January, Airbus announced it would hire more than 13,000 employees worldwide in 2023, including 7,000 to fill new roles.
For several months, the company has been working to increase the production rate of the A220, but is still a long way from its goal of delivering six aircraft per month. In 2022, Airbus produced 53 aircraft, or 4.4 per month.
Help from Quebec
A year ago, the Legault government poured $337.1 million into the A220, an amount that came on top of the $1.3 billion invested by Philippe Couillard’s Liberals in 2016.
For its part, Airbus announced a US$900 million (C$1 billion) investment in the program last year.
Almost 3,000 people currently work at the A220 plant in Mirabel, around 500 more than a year ago. Around 600 more are employed at Stelia.
