The Last of Us fans spot an embarrassing mistake in the new episode

Already a huge hit, HBO’s The Last of Us has been renewed for a second season and has received rave reviews from fans and critics alike… although one eagle-eyed fan spotted an embarrassing mistake in Sunday night’s new episode.

The new episode, titled “Kin,” follows Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) on their journey west, while Joel reunites with his brother Tommy (Gabriel Luna).

While the episode was well received, a TikTok user spotted a number of crew members visibly in one shot.

The faux pas was quite reminiscent of a widely publicized blunder on another major HBO show – Game of Thrones – when a Starbucks mug was discovered on a table near Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke).

The glitch was first spotted by TikTok user @domineo32, who was playing a scene of Joel and Ellie walking across a snow-covered bridge… but when he zoomed in on a specific aerial photograph, a number of people believed to be crew members became members discovered at the edge of the picture.

The TikTok user paused the aerial view, filmed hundreds if not thousands of feet above the bridge using a helicopter or drone, and zoomed in on two specific areas.

Crew members were sighted at the end of the trail before the bridge, and more were sighted on another trail south of the bridge.

A Twitter user named @stjguitarist shared a screenshot of this video in response to a tweet sent by Neil Druckmann, creator of The Last of Us video game.

Druckmann laughed at rumors that a character from the second game, Dina, was featured in last week’s episode in his original tweet, although Druckmann has yet to respond to @stjguitarist’s tweet.

“Brilliant episode. Something you might want to fix and upload again. You can see the film crew in this shot,” @stjguitarist said in his first tweet.

In a second tweet, he also poked fun at the Game of Thrones Starbucks gaffe, placing two large Starbucks cup graphics near where the crew members can be seen.

‘It’s clear that way, in case anyone can’t see it. I’ve highlighted the areas where the crew is standing. With a bit of humour,’ he added.

He clarified, “Also, I LOVE both the game and the series. I’m not just pointing out errors. But I’m sure they would want to fix it.”

When the now infamous Starbucks slip-up happened, HBO finally acknowledged the mistake with a humorous statement.

“The latte that appeared in the episode was a mistake. Daenerys had ordered some herbal tea,” the broadcaster said, before finally scrubbing the mug off the episode on HBO Max, though the massive amounts of GIFs and memes still live on.

Whether HBO responds to the mistake with the same humor or if they digitally alter the episode remains to be seen.

The Last of Us is based on Neil Druckmann’s video game that debuted for the PlayStation 3 in 2013 and went on to become one of the best-selling video games of all time.

The story takes place after a worldwide plague after the mutated Cordyceps fungus has decimated humanity.

The show follows Joel as he is tasked with bringing Ellie – who is somehow immune to the fungus – out west in hopes of developing a cure.

HBO announced upon renewal of the show for Season 2 that the premiere episode of the series has surpassed 22 million viewers through on-demand formats, five times the viewership of the linear broadcast.

Episode 2 of The Last of Us drew 5.7 million viewers Sunday night in the United States across HBO Max and linear TV shows, based on Nielsen and first-party data, adding more than 1 million new viewers since the series premiere.
