Several supermarket chains in the UK are restricting the sale of some vegetables and fruit due to supply problems. Market leaders Tesco and Aldi have just three cucumbers and a strict limit on tomatoes and peppers per customer, the BBC reported today. It is a precautionary measure. Broadcaster Sky News reported that Britain’s biggest tomato producer, APS Produce, had warned of shortages until at least the end of April.
The British Farmers’ Association had already warned about the drop in domestic food production. Recently, photos of empty vegetable shelves have been circulating on social media. Retailers blame extreme weather in Spain and North Africa, which has destroyed much of the crop. Other competitors, such as Sainsbury’s and Lidl, have not rationed so far.
