Unknown people sprayed butyric acid on the premises of the open-air theater in Lübeck, Germany. An election campaign event for the Schleswig-Holstein Greens was due to take place today, for which German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock was also expected. A police spokeswoman said the event was canceled for security reasons.
A planned evening event with Baerbock in Ahrensburg in the Stormarn district is expected to go ahead as planned. A new state parliament will be elected in Schleswig-Holstein on 8 May.
pungent smell
Green employees noticed a pungent smell in the morning as they set the stage and informed firefighters. As a spokesman for the state association of the Greens in Schleswig-Holstein announced, no one was hurt. Police had previously spoken of five people who complained of mild respiratory irritation and were treated on the spot.
The party harshly condemned the incident: “No such attack will change our political positions; on the contrary, it makes clear once again that individuals are not concerned with argumentative debate,” it said in a statement. Lübeck’s cultural scene is suffering and it is hoped that the open-air stage can resume quickly.
