Thousands of civilians left without medical care in Sudan due to armed attacks

Khartoum, April 30 (Prensa Latina) A humanitarian organization in Sudan today denounced that thousands of civilians in the West Darfur region have been left without medical care as a result of recent violence in the area.

The non-governmental organization Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), in a statement without giving an exact number, said scores of patients from medical centers in the city of Kreneik and El Geneina, the state capital of West Darfur, had fled the intercommunity clashes.

In this sense, an MSF health worker, nurse Emily Wanbugu, explained that at the university hospital in the city of Geneina, dozens of patients had left the medical facility after the shooting.

According to West Darfur Governor Khamis Abdallah Abkar, tribal violence in Kereneik and other surrounding towns in West Darfur has left 201 dead and 103 wounded to date.

Eyewitnesses attributed the ongoing attacks on communities since last Thursday to Arab tribes, who claim such violent actions were carried out in retaliation for the deaths of two shepherds in the aforementioned demarcation.

Inter-ethnic clashes have erupted in the Darfur region in recent months, despite the government and warring guerrillas signing a historic peace deal in September 2020.

The armed conflict in Darfur, which began in 2003 and has involved armed forces, pro-government militias and insurgent forces, has claimed more than 300,000 lives and displaced 2.5 million people, according to humanitarian organizations.
