The Capitals (Wild Card 2) meet the Panthers in Game 1 of their first-ever playoff meeting. The Capitals’ streak of eight straight playoff appearances – the second longest in franchise history after 14 straight games from 1983 to 1996 – includes a Stanley Cup win in 2018 and is the second longest active streak. With a record of 44-26-12, the Caps reached 100 points for the sixth time in eight seasons. Washington is the only team in the NHL to have 100 points six times in that span.

Caps captain Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom, who collectively hold the Capitals records for career playoff goals, assists, points and games played, are expected to raise their combined franchise benchmark to 14 for most years in the postseason. Washington’s roster includes 13 Stanley Cup Champions, including nine who won with them in 2018: Backstrom, Ovechkin, John Carlson, Evgeny Kuznetsov, Lars Eller, Michal Kempny, Dmitry Orlov, TJ Oshie and Tom Wilson.
