Mark Wahlberg has claimed that religion is “not popular” in Hollywood.
The Boogie Nights star is a devout Catholic and starred in the 2022 faith film Father Stu.
Wahlberg appeared on Today on Wednesday (February 22). During the interview, Wahlberg wore a cross of ashes on his forehead to commemorate Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent in the Christian calendar.
In the interview, Wahlberg stated that he didn’t want to hide his religion in public, saying, “It’s a balance. I don’t want to shove it down anyone’s throat, but I’m not denying my faith. That’s an even greater sin.
“You know, it’s not popular in my line of business, but I can’t deny my belief. It’s important to me to share that with people. However, I have friends from all walks of life and from all different faiths and religions, so it’s also important to respect and honor them.”
Last year, Wahlberg starred in Father Stu as Stuart Long, a real-life boxer-turned-Catholic priest.
The 51-year-old actor claimed to have spent “millions and millions” of his own money on the film, inspired by Mel Gibson’s $30million (£23million) investment in the Christian film The Passion of the Christ.
Wahlberg said he couldn’t take credit for the film’s success “because God chose me to do the film.”
“He [Dios] You know that I can finally use all of the talents and gifts that have been given to me for your highest good and to fulfill my part in your great whole. I mean, I prayed every day to make this film.

However, the actor also admitted that he had to move several times because members of the community kept coming up with movie ideas.
“I’m not in church looking for material. I’m trying to find some peace and quiet so I can worship,” he said.
