Boeing has halted deliveries of its 787 Dreamliner aircraft after another fuselage-related issue recently surfaced. The aircraft manufacturer calls it an “analysis error” but is confident it poses no immediate threat to the operating fleet. Boeing had previously suspended deliveries of the 787 for more than a year due to production shortages; recent performance has pushed the stock down almost 3%.

new problem

Boeing has temporarily suspended deliveries of its Dreamliner aircraft after it was revealed that their fuselage components required additional analysis. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) must be fully satisfied with the issue before deliveries can resume. The agency also said it is working with Boeing to determine actions that may be required for recently delivered planes. Boeing released a statement explaining the issue:

“While reviewing the certification documentation, Boeing discovered an analysis error from our supplier related to the 787’s forward pressure bulkhead. We have notified the FAA and halted 787 deliveries while we complete the required analysis and documentation.”

Boeing has assured that there are no immediate flight safety concerns for the operating fleet and that it is in touch with customers and will continue to follow the FAA’s guidance. The planemaker said near-term deliveries will be impacted, but expects “no change in our production and delivery outlook for the year.”

Prior Delivery Disruption

The recent announcement brings back memories of the delivery drought that hit Boeing’s 787 not so long ago. Deliveries of the Boeing 787 were halted by the FAA in May 2021 after manufacturing defects surfaced and concerns arose about Boeing’s inspection methods. The FAA then stated in February 2022 that it would not allow Boeing to self-certify the completion of each 787 aircraft.

This led to the FAA completing final airworthiness clearances for each individual 787 aircraft, just as it has done for all Boeing 737 MAX aircraft since deliveries resumed following the Lion Air and Ethiopian Airlines crashes.

For over a year, Boeing has not delivered a single Dreamliner, disrupting the plans of several airlines around the world, from American Airlines in the US to Vistara in India.

The planemaker eventually resumed deliveries in August 2022, handing over a 787 to American Airlines and quickly ramping up the delivery schedule to more than 30 planes in about a month.

Brian West, Boeing’s chief financial officer, previously announced on an earnings call that while it will take time to ramp up production of the Dreamliner, they still hope to ship 70 to 80 Dreamliners to customers this year.
