Fan hits soccer goalkeeper during game; Keeper wrestles him to the ground before security steps in

A Europa League match between Dutch PSV and Spain’s Sevilla FC turned into a boxing match on Thursday night.

A spectator ran onto the field during the game and approached Sevilla FC goalkeeper Marko Dmitrović and it didn’t end well.

The fan landed a punch at Dmitrović before the keeper decided to retaliate.

Dmitrović’s punch threw the fan onto the grass before security and the players began to swarm.

The fan tried to free himself from Dmitrović, but the goalkeeper wouldn’t let him go before security forces arrived, forcing the fan off the field.

It wasn’t the first time a fan had jumped the barriers to reach out to a player. Sometimes they’re rabid fans who just want to spend a moment with their favorite players. Dmitrović’s interaction with this fan is not unique.

Columbia’s Millonarios’ Daniel Cataño in the Categoria Primera A earlier this month had a fan rush onto the field to beat him. Cataño didn’t look as the fan hit him from behind. Like Dmitrović, he defended himself.

Cataño charged after the fan, who sprinted in the opposite direction after the attack. Cataño brought the fan down until players and security guards intervened to separate them.

Referees in the match between Millonarios and Deportes Tolima gave Cataño a red card disqualifying him from the game. Millonarios boycotted the game, causing further controversy.

Dmitrović continued in his match, which PSV won after Luuk de Jong and Fabio Silva scored in the second half to win 2-0. Sevilla FC advance to the round of 16 with a 3-2 aggregate lead.
