Officers went to the scene and arrested the man, originally from Tunisia and illegally in France.
According to France Bleu, the man, who faces immediate trial and is being forced to leave France, reportedly told officers the woman was the one who attacked him.
The incident is similar to a recent Spanish case in which a woman cut off her would-be rapist’s penis.
The couple, both originally from Bangladesh, worked together in a bar in Sant Andreu de la Barca, near Barcelona.
The man is said to have tried to rape the woman, who then cut off his penis in retaliation.
The unnamed woman contacted police to admit her assault and the man was taken to hospital for emergency surgery so medics could attempt to reattach his penis.
Both were arrested by the Spanish police. The man was charged with attempted rape and the woman with assault and amputation.
